Since 1970 when the Vancouver Canucks entered the National Hockey League, the team has been the perennial talk of the town. From September to March, through the dark and rainy days of our west coast winter, NHL hockey has provided sports fans with big league entertainment.
It’s always exciting when the likes of the New York Rangers, the Montreal Canadiens, the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Chicago Blackhawks or the Boston Bruins come to town. Now it’s playoff time, and the excitement level really ramps up. Rogers Arena is just down the street from the Best Western Plus Chateau Granville, and when there’s a home game, the lobby is crowded with the colors of the Canucks. Fans from across the province rrive to check in to their rooms at the BEST WESTERN PLUS Chateau Granville, on their way to to watch their local heroes.
We’ve got the scorers who can put the puck in the net, we’ve got the goalies who can keep the other guys off the score sheet and we’ve got the defence who can deliver the punishing hits to the opposition. We’ve got the team who can do it all and go the distance for the Stanley Cup!
Before the game starts, streams of Canuck jerseys, from every era can be seen excitedly parading down Granville Street on the way to the game. Banners wave, hoots and hollers are exchanged as fans make their way to the game. The energy inside the arena is unforgettable. With every seat filled, the exuberant crowd cheers on the Vancouver Canucks on their quest for their first ever Stanley Cup.
It’s not just Rogers Arena that comes alive with boisterous hockey fans. All along Granville Street, the many pubs and clubs are also jammed with the team faithful. Downtown Vancouver comes alive during playoff hockey time; like at no other time of the year. Spring is in the air, the evenings are warmer now and the party goes outside to the street! Truly a festival atmosphere takes over the downtown core. And when the team is as good as this year’s Canucks, the expectations, hopes, and dreams are very high!
The Vancouver Canucks slogan is “We are all Canucks!” Well, it’s playoff time, and at no other time of year does this slogan ring more true. It’s April and the playoffs are starting.
