April 1st is April Fools’ Day, a day of practical jokes. Pranks, nonsense, and light-hearted tormenting abound as people celebrate this annual tradition. Where did this idea of a day of practical jokes come from?
The history of April Fools’ is a bit clouded. The most popular theory is that France changed its calendar in the 1500s, so that the New Year would begin in January to match the Roman calendar instead of beginning at the start of spring, in late March or early April. However word of the change traveled slowly, and many people in rural areas continued to celebrate the New Year in the spring. These country dwellers became known as “April fools,” or so the story goes.
Another theory is that April Fools’ Day simply grew out of age-old European spring festivals of renewal, in which pranks and camouflaging one’s identity are common.
The most ironic aspect of researching the origins of April Fools Day, is that the researcher must be particularly vigilant that they are not referring to, or quoting a well versed prank! Many reputable scientists and publications have published their own April Fools joke, with the best even being perpetuated as fact.
A quick Google search for April Fools’ pranks will take you to many pages of tricks, jokes, and gags that have been carried out throughout the ages.
‘Left-handed’ door handles . . . April Fools!
