Granville Street!

When you look at a map of Vancouver, you will see that from the shores of Burrard Inlet on the north, to the banks of the Fraser River on Vancouver’s southern boundary, Granville Street is a primary arterial avenue in this burgeoning metropolis, and is a direct link to Vancouver International Airport and the heart of downtown Vancouver and the BEST WESTERN PLUS Chateau Granville.

The Best Western Plus Chateau Granville is situated at 1100 Granville Street, in the heart of Vancouver’s Entertainment District. Our lobby doors open to a rainbow of neon lights lining both sides of the street through the city’s core. Nightclubs, retail venues, restaurants, theatres, and a myriad of fast food outlets make Granville Street a destination for both visitors and locals. Many a night, the street is crowded with revellers into the wee hours. Granville Street is where the action is!

Colourful, exciting, and fast-paced, Granville Street has a history as old as Vancouver. The street was named in the late 1800’s for the British Secretary of State for the Colonies, Granville Leveson-Gower, 2nd Earl Granville. In fact, the town site that eventually became Vancouver was originally named Granville, before City councillors adopted the present name for the city in 1886.

During the 1950s, Granville Street, already Vancouver’s entertainment center, was known as The Great White Way. Then the street was lined with one of the world’s largest displays of neon signs. Unfortunately in retrospect, City councilors of the day determined that the neon of the Great White Way was too gaudy, and the fabulous spectacle of lights was removed, replaced by the more subdued hue of fluorescent bulbs. The removal of the neon lights was perhaps a harbinger of the decline of Granville Street which began in the 1960’s, and continued up until the present millennium.

In the early 2000s, with Vancouver preparing for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, a massive redevelopment of downtown Granville Street began to take shape, right in front of The BEST WESTERN PLUS Chateau Granville. As a result, the Granville Street Entertainment District was one of the most popular places to be during the 2010 Winter Olympics, as athletes and visitors from all over the world took to the street for a two week long party!

Today the neon is back, and it lights one of the most festive districts you will find anywhere!  Without a doubt, no one visits the BEST WESTERN PLUS Chateau Granville and the Granville Street Entertainment District without coming away with a least one great story. Tell us yours!
