Lions Gate Bridge

Lions Gate Bridge emerges from the evergreen forest blanketing Stanley Park, and gracefully spans the First Narrows entrance into Vancouver harbour. Like San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, Lions Gate Bridge is a West Coast treasure. This iconic span is the feature of many a post card, with its green towers rising above the waterline, supporting the suspended roadway below.

Crossing Burrard Inlet northbound across Lions Gate Bridge takes you away from the downtown peninsula where the BEST WESTERN PLUS Chateau Granville hotel is situated, and into the Coast Mountains that dominate North Vancouver on the inlet’s North Shore. The Lions Gate Bridge is named for the twin peaks that rise from these mountains, looking strikingly similar to the lions of Trafalgar Square in London, England. You are now on the highway north to world-renowned Whistler Village and Ski Resort via Highway 99, or west to the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal via Highway 1, where the British Columbia Ferry system sails travelers to Vancouver Island, or up to the beautiful Sunshine Coast.

Lions Gate Bridge was constructed in the Great Depression of the 1930’s, and rebuilt in the early 2000’s. This rebuilding was actually an engineering marvel, as this heavily used bridge was rebuilt section by section, while remaining open and in use for most of the reconstruction period.

Lions Gate Bridge has many stories, including the University of British Columbia’s engineering graduates regularly suspending a Volkswagen Beetle from the bridge as a graduation prank. Every time the engineers pull this time honoured trick, the same question begs of “How did they do that?!”

Cruise ships coming and going for the famed Alaska Cruise pass under the arching bridge, and are a common sight in the summer, providing a photo opportunity unparalleled in splendor, colour, and romance.

Vancouver’s Lions Gate Bridge is perhaps the greatest manmade landmark in the city, and is a structure that is dear to the hearts of every Vancouverite. Located only minutes from the BEST WESTERN PLUS Chateau Granville hotel, the Lions Gate Bridge is a must-see for many visitors to our city.
