Earth Hour 2013 takes place Saturday March 23rd at 8:30 pm. This growing annual event is hosted by the World Wildlife Fund, and supported locally by BC Hydro. Earth Hour is an international event, with participation reaching every corner of the globe. Earth Hour encourages individuals, communities, and businesses to turn off lights and unnecessary equipment for one hour to save energy and raise awareness about our environmental footprint.

The BEST WESTERN PLUS Chateau Granville Hotel in downtown Vancouver is proud to support the Earth Hour initiative, as our own city has been named a global finalist in the Earth Hour City Challenge! Vancouver is a leader amongst international cities at creating a greener, cleaner and more sustainable community.

Earth Hour has grown to become the largest, symbolic mass participation event in the world; with the hope to mobilize people to take action on climate change, Earth Hour now spans a global community of millions of people in over 7000 cities across more than 150 countries.

Reviewing a brief history of this global event sees a rapidly growing trend since the first Earth Hour took place on March 31 2007 in Sydney Australia, when 2.2 million residents and 2,100 businesses participate.

Earth Hour 2008 was held in 371 cities and towns in more than 35 countries globally, and as many as 50 million people participate around the world.

In 2009 the Earth Hour environmental movement saw hundreds of millions of people in more than 4,000 cities and towns across 88 countries switch off their lights for one hour.

On March 27 2010 Earth Hour witnessed a record 128 countries and territories take part, and iconic buildings and landmarks around the world stood in darkness for one hour!

Earth Hour 2011 began to expand beyond the symbolic one hour of lights out, by asking supporters to think about what else they can do to make a difference.

Last year on March 31 2012, Earth Hour set new participation records, and became the largest voluntary action for the environment, with more than 6950 cities and towns across 152 countries and territories taking part.

At the BEST WESTERN PLUS Chateau Granville hotel in downtown Vancouver we are doing our part to care for the environment by participating in the Green Key Eco-rating program for hotels. It’s how we’re working to achieve the goals of Earth Hour year round! As well, we’ll be having some fun in our Edge Social Grille and Lounge with an Earth Cocktail Hour in support of Earth Hour!
