We are a green hotel and carry out a number of initiatives to be and stay green!
We have partnered with different programs in order to reduce our environmental impact and have a positive influence on our community. We are actively involved with Green Key, Ecostay and Clean the World that all help us to acheive our green initiatives both in the hotel and our conference centre. We believe it is important for everyone to try to participate in green initiatives big or small. Here are 5 easy step to be green:
1.Recycling
This is a task that everyone can participate in and is becoming easier to do as food packaging is now more clearly labelled with recycling symbols. Recycling bins are also more widely available to both houses, condos and apartments. Did you know that recycling does not have to be only with food and drink packaging? You can also recycle your clothes by donating the items to various charities.
2.Light Bulbs
Use energy efficient light bulbs. Once the lights are no longer working make sure to recycle them. Ensure that you turn off the lights when they are not in use or when a room is empty, little changes like these make a huge difference. Participate in Earth hour, an event that commenced in Sydney as a lights-off event and has since engaged in more than 7,000 cities and towns worldwide. Earth hour will take place on Saturday, March 19th.
3.Reusable Containers/Bags
Do you bring your lunch to work every day? Do you use a container or a reusable bag? Cut down on waste and cost by using a lunchbox container. Containers are great for keeping your food fresh and also preventing against spills. Are you an avid coffee drinker and need that all important coffee to start your day? Use a reusable cup, this will help save the environment. Several coffee establishments encourage the use of your own cup and many even reward their customers for using their own cups by offering them a little discount. Purchase a reusable water bottle, no more trips to the shop to purchase your bottled water. The use of reusable containers are great for both the environment and on your pocket!
Use reusable bags when doing you’re shopping, avoid paying the additional levy on plastic bags by using your own reusable bags.
4.Batteries
Once you are finished with your batteries make sure to recycle the batteries accordingly, once they are finished. Alternatively you can purchase rechargeable batteries, they are cost effective and are environmentally friendly.
5.Leave the Car Behind!
As we are approaching the milder weather, why not leave your car at home and cycle or walk to work, if possible. If this is not possible, try public transport. Even if you decide to only leave your car at home once or twice a week this will make a huge difference to both the environment and on your pocket! Give it a go.
There is so many initiative that you can participate in to help the environment, these are just 5 easy steps to be green. Share your green tips with us, we would love to hear them.
